Why did Packard stop making cars?
Packard was known for making the finest automobile bodies in America, but to save costs it decided to farm out its body development to Briggs Manufacturing in the 1940s. In 1952, Chrysler bought out Briggs, agreeing to continue providing bodies to Packard through 1954, when Packard's contract ended.
Why did the Packard plant close?
Losing their upper class market and not finding footing as a middle class manufacturer because of heavy competition from the Big Three, their last car model, simply titled the 'Packard', was produced in 1958 though the Detroit plant ceased manufacturing in 1957.
