How do you test a GM ignition coil?

Place a lead from the ohmmeter on either side terminal and one in the center high tension terminal. Read the ohms off the meter. You are looking for 7500 to 10,500 ohms, and if the reading falls outside that range, it indicates a defective coil.

What should the Ohms be on a coil?

You should have a resistance reading of at least 3-4.5 ohms. A bad coil will show a higher reading then 3-4.5. Next, place the red or black lead from the meter to the centre of the coil , and to either one of the terminals positive or negative. You want 9500-10000 Ohms, a little less is ok but no more.

Should there be voltage on negative side of coil?

If “no HT or distributes connected” means that thevside which is not connected to the positive has no connection on it, and if the coil is not open, the other terminal should have positive 12 volts on it.

What would cause no spark from coil?

There are a few reasons for no spark, new coil pack could be defective, crank sensor, ignition module or bad wire in primary circuit, faulty ECM/PCM. You may have to have a good technician have a look, diagnose and estimate repair. Second link gives detailed instructions for testing and diagnosing coil pack.

How do you test a GM ignition coil with a multimeter?

Turn the multimeter on. Attach the its red lead to the right terminal, then attach the black lead to the left terminal. Read the voltage displayed on the multimeter. Your coil pack is properly powered if the reading is 11 to 12 volts.

How do you test a GM ignition Control Module?

Clip the negative test light lead to a solid ground such as negative battery terminal. Ask a partner to crank the engine numerous times. The test light should turn on and off as the ignition control module is signaled. If no light is preset, the module is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Can you test a coil pack?

Coils are sensitive to heat and may produce an intermittent problem if their internal components become weak. ... However, you can test the coil pack on your car using a voltmeter.
